2008 CHARLES W. CHESTNUTT #4222 Pane of 20 x 41 cents US Postage Stamps - On Thursday, January 31st 2008, the United States Postal Service honored writer Charles W. Chesnutt with the 31st stamp in the Black Heritage Series. Chesnutt was a realist whose works predominately centered on the color line that was a part of American life for so many years. Howard Paine, the art director for this particular issue, took his design from a 1908 photograph of Chesnutt that is found in the special collections library at Fisk University. The photograph was recreated in paint form by Californian artist Kazuhiko Sano and serves well to showcase the importance of such a prolific figure in black American history. The Chesnutt issue will be available on January 31, 2008 with a first day ceremony being held at the Cleveland Public Library in Cleveland, OH ( Black Heritage Series )more detail
