2000 DISTINGUISHED SOLDIERS #3396a Pane of 20 x 33 cents US Postage Stamps - In 2000 the USPS honors four distinguished American soldiers. JOHN J HINES' superior leadership skills were recognized by General John J. Pershing. During WWI, Hines successively commanded a regiment, brigade, division, and corps in combat. OMAR NELSON BRADLEY commanded the largest US battle force ever. He was one of the most respected wartime commanders because of his leadership qualities and concern for the one million troops he directed during WWII. ALVIN CULLUM YORK was among a patrol of 17 soldiers ordered to destroy a German machine gun emplacement. The patrol lost half its men after crossing into enemy territory, forcing York to attack the enemy alone. York returned to the American front with 132 prisoners. AUDIE L. MURPHY was the most decorated US combat solder in WWII. Under heavy gunfire, Murphy ordered his men to retreat while he stayed back on a burning tank destroyer. He used the tank's machine gun to stop the attack and saved his unit and himself. ( John L Hines, Omar Nelson Bradley, Alvin Cullum York, Audie L Murphy, Heroes )more detail
