1997 GEORGE WASHINGTON SOUVENIR SHEET #3140 Sheet of 12 x 60 cents US Postage Stamps

1997 GEORGE WASHINGTON SOUVENIR SHEET #3140 Sheet of 12 x 60 cents US Postage Stamps

1997 GEORGE WASHINGTON SOUVENIR SHEET #3140 Sheet of 12 x 60 cents US Postage Stamps - On May 29, 1997 in San Francisco, CA the USPS celebrated 150 years of US Postage stamps. Historically, the United States hosts a major philatelic exposition in the sixth year of each decade. This tradition was deferred in the 1990s to coincide with the 150th anniversary of America's first postage stamps. The Pacific 97 sheets were available at the Pacific 97 philatelic exposition in San Francisco from May 29 to June 8, or by phone or mail order through the Philatelic Fulfillment Service Center. Although the USPS. originally intended to sell the sheets only during Pacific 97, there were widespread complaints about such limited sales. As a result, phone orders were accepted, if placed before May 29. Mail orders had to be postmarked by June 8, 1997. All unsold stamps were destroyed. This marked the most limited sale of a U.S. postage stamp ever. Interestingly, the Pacific 97 stamps were not printed separately, but rather, were printed side-by-side on the same sheet. The sheets were created on the Bureau of Engraving and Printing's Giori F press, a web-fed combination intaglio offset press. In fact, one intaglio printing sleeve was used for the entire press run of the Pacific 97 stamps. However, this single sleeve was "chromed" three times, a process which involves using a layer of chrome to coat the sleeve. This layer of chrome enabled the sheet to survive the entire press run. Four offset plates were used to print the enlarged stamp proof reproduction and heading that appear in the decorative selvage of the souvenir sheets. The phosphor tagging block covering the 12 stamps, which is only visible under short-wave ultraviolet light, was also applied at the F press.

US 2010 Lunar Year of the Tiger 12 x 44 Cent Souvenir Sheet Stamps NEW

US 2010 Lunar Year of the Tiger 12 x 44 Cent Souvenir Sheet Stamps NEW

US 2010 Lunar Year of the Tiger 12 x 44 Cent Souvenir Sheet Stamps NEW - This is a Souvenir Sheet for the 44 cent Celebrating Lunar New Year: Year of the Tiger commemorative stamp release. On January 14, 2010, in Los Angeles, California, at the El Pueblo Historical Monument, the Postal ServiceTM will issue a 44 cent, Celebrating Lunar New Year: Year of the Tiger commemorative stamp in a souvenir sheet of 12 stamps, designed by Ethel Kessler of Bethesda, Maryland. The $5.28 Celebrating Lunar New Year: Year of the Tiger souvenir sheet may not be split, and the stamps may not be sold individually. The U.S. Postal Service® introduced its Celebrating Lunar New Year series in 2008. This is the third stamp in that series, which will continue through 2019 with stamps for the Year of the Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Ram, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Boar. Art Director Ethel Kessler and artist Kam Mak, who grew up in New York City s Chinatown and now lives in Brooklyn, worked on the new series and decided to focus on some of the common ways the Lunar New Year Holiday is celebrated. To commemorate the Year of the Tiger, which begins February 14, 2010, they chose narcissus flowers, considered auspicious at any time of the year and, thus, especially appropriate at this time of renewed hope for the future. The illustration was originally created using oil paints on a fiberboard panel. Kessler s design also incorporates elements from the previous series of Lunar New Year stamps, using Clarence Lee s intricate paper cut design of a tiger and the Chinese character drawn in grass style calligraphy by Lau Bun for Tiger.

Chesnutt with the 31st stamp in the Black Heritage Series. Chesnutt was a realist whose works predominately centered on the color line that was a part of American life for so many years. Howard Paine, the art director for this particular issue, took his design from a 1908 photograph of Chesnutt that is found in the special collections library at Fisk University. The photograph was recreated in paint form by Californian artist Kazuhiko Sano and serves well to showcase the importance of such a prolific figure in black American history. The Chesnutt issue will be available on January 31, 2008 with a first day ceremony being held at the Cleveland Public Library in Cleveland, OH ( Black Heritage Series )

2004 NAVAJO JEWELRY #3750 Pane of 20 x 2 cents US Postage Stamps - In 2004 the USPS issued this 2 cent stamp as the fifth design in the American Design Series. The Navajo Indians began silversmithing in the mid-1800s. The silver and turquoise squash blossom necklace on this stamp is a traditional Navajo motif. This stamp (Scott #3749) is a postage stamp that under ordinary circumstances would have been largely ignored by the vast majority of United States Postal Service customers. However, something happened in early 2006 that raised awareness of the Navajo Jewelry stamp to nearly everyone in the United States who mailed first class letters. On January 8, 2006, the USPS raised the rate for mailing a 1-ounce, first class letter from 37 cents to 39 cents. People with a supply of unused 37-cent stamps immediately descended upon their local post office in search of 2-cent "make-up" stamps that would allow them to use their 37 cent stamps.
