Description
This year the Chinese lunar New Year falls on February 1, 2003. It is the year of the sheep. To welcome the year of the sheep, the Directorate General of Posts has chosen the work of Mr. Ben Wang, who won a competition for drawing the ani-mals of the Chinese zodiac, to print a set of two New Year's Greeting Postage Stamps (Issue of 2002), as well as a souvenir sheet and stamp booklet. The two stamps will have denominations of NT$3.50 and NT$13. The souvenir sheet is composed of two sets of these stamps, worth NT$33. The stamp booklet is composed of twelve NT$3.50 stamps, with a total value of NT$42. The Chinese have traditionally used double-revolving combinations of the Ten Celestial Stems and the Twelve Terrestrial Branches to designate years. The full 60-year cycle is called a chia-tzu, for the first stem and first branch. The Twelve Terrestrial Branches also have animal representations: tzu (rat), chou (ox), yin (tiger), mao (rabbit), chen (dragon), szu (snake), wu (horse), wei (sheep), shen (monkey), yu (rooster), hsu (dog) and hai (pig). Each year the Directorate issues New Year's Greeting Postage Stamps taking the upcoming year's animal sign as the theme. These stamps are known as the "animal zodiac stamps.

Carry within Itself the Wu and Yue Areas

MY COLLECTION
Description: Carry within Itself the Wu and Yue Areas
Text found on stamp: 太湖 . 包孕吴越, 1995 - 12, 500分, CHINA, T, 中国邮政.
Designer: Fan Yang
Background:

Taihu Lake, known as Zhenze in ancient times, extends across Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces . As the third largest fresh water lake in China formed from a gulf dammed with the silt from the lower reaches of the Yangtze and Qiantang rivers, Taihu Lake sits in the center of the river network in areas south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze, facilitating irrigation and shipping . The areas around the lake abound with rice, wheat, mulberry and tea, as well as other local specialties such as whitebait, hence the name of "a land of plenty". The beautiful scenery of Taihu Lake is well known both at home and abroad. Scattered in the lake are dozens of isles which, along with the surrounding mountain peaks and peninsulas, form the scenery of 72 peaks. Famous scenic spots around the lake include hills and waters of Wuxi, gardens of Suzhou, cave paradise of Yixing and the historical sites of the Kingdom of Wu (222-280).

The Dongting West Mountain in Wuxian County, Jiangsu Province, is the largest island mountain in Taihu Lake, with the beautiful main peak more than 300 meters above sea level. Opposite it is the Dongting East Mountain where flowers bloom all the year round and is known as a "mountain of flowers and fruits".

Yuantouzhu (like a turtle's head into the lake) in the like-side Wuxi City of Jiangsu Province is one of the best places to enjoy the beauty of Taihu Lake. The gardens there are built against the hills and by the water, constituting a peculiar style. "Yuan Zhu Chun Tao" (spring waves around Yuantouzhu) is one of those landscapes. In the natural stone wall of Yuantouzhu beside the lake, there is a stone inscription read as "Breeding rich lands", which is believe as the key comment of Taihu Lake.

Lihu Lake is the inner lake of Taihu Lake. According to legend, it is named after Fan Li, a senior official of Yue, a state in the later Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 B.C.), who resigned after success and carried Xi Shi, a famed beauty at that time, to go boating on Taihu Lake. Liyuan Garden by the side of the lake is one of the best known gardens in Jiangnan (the areas south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River).

Jichang garden is a classic one with unique style in the Taihu Lake scenic spots. A key cultural relic under state protection, it is featured with water corridors in the east and rockeries and plants in the west. Xiequ Garden (Garden of Harmonious Interest) in the Summer Palace of Beijing is built after the architectural style of it.

Plum Garden, also in Wuxi City, is known for the thousands of plum that, when in full bloom in early spring, gladdens the heart and refreshes the mind of visitors. The top of Nianqu Tower gives visitors a view of the beautiful scenery of Taihu Lake in the distance.

Ten Thousand Arm Avalokitesvara (Souvenir sheet)

MY COLLECTION
Description: Ten Thousand Arm Avalokitesvara (Souvenir sheet)
Text found on stamp: 1996 - 20, 500分, CHINA, T, 敦煌壁画, 元 . 千手观音.
Designer: Wu Jiankun; Ren Yu
Background:

Located on the west edge of the Hexi Corridor in western Gansu, China, Dunhuang Grottoes, always known as a "Buddhist art treasury", is one of the country's largest ancient grotto group, a key cultural relics unit under State protection. The Dunhuang Grottoes in a broad sense include the Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes, the Xi Qianfodong Grottoes, Yulin Grottoes in Ansi, Qianfodong Grottoes in Shuikouxia, which are usually referred to as Mogao Grottoes. The Mogao Grottoes were inaugurated in the 2nd year of Jian Yuan of the early Qin Dynasty (AD 366), but the earliest grottoes extant were dug during the sixteen Kingdoms of Bei Ling (421 to 439 AD). The construction of the grottoes continued in dynasties including Northern Wei (386-534), Western Wei (535-556), Northern Zhou (557-581), Sui, Tang, Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms (907-960), Song, Western Xia (1038-1227) and Yuan. The number of grottoes extant totaled 492, and the murals within the grottoes cover an area of about 45,000 square meters; besides there are 2,400 clay sculptures in the Dunhuang Grottoes.

What the Dunhuang murals mainly depict fall into four categories: The Jing Bian, stories illustrating Buddhist scripture; The Ben Sheng story, the previous incarnation life stories of Sakyamuni (the founder of Buddhism); The Buddha, arhat and little Qianfo; and the portraits (with real names )of those who had contributed to the construction of the grottoes or offered sacrifices to the Buddhas. The murals in Northern Wei period, representatives of the early style murals, were drawn in bold and vigorous lines, which looked natural and flowing. However, most lines have already peeled off, and the colors, faded, The mural style in the Sui Dynasty became smooth and vivid, with rich and yet soft colors, The Dunhuang mural art reached its climax in the Tang Dynasty, when lines became thicker and smoother, colors ,richer and more sophisticated. Generally the murals were magnificent, picturing vast ranging subjects. The murals in the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms and early Song Dynasties followed Tang, with natural folk art styles. And in the Yuan Dynasty, murals were painted with dark and gloomy, and seldom red colors. The wet mural style in slight ink and wash made the murals look mysterious.

The Dunhuang murals, the representatives of Chinese arts in the 4th to 13th centuries, have provided many precious materials for the research materials for the research of the history of Buddhist art.
