1999 BROADWAY SONGWRITERS #3350a Pane of 20 x 33 cents US Postage Stamps - On 1999 the 14th and final installment of the popular Legends of American Music series honored Broadway songwriters. Brothers Ira and George Gershwin created over a dozen Broadway shows, including "Funny Face" (1927), "Girl Crazy" (1930), and the first musical to win a Pulitzer Prize, "Of Thee I Sing" (1931). Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe wrote "Brigadoon" (1947), "My Fair Lady" (1956), and "Camelot" (1960). Lorenz Hart crafted lyrics for music by Richard Rodgers, including the songs "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" and "I Could Write a Book," for the musical "Pal Joey" (1940), and "My Funny Valentine," for "Babes In Arms" (1937). Richard Rodgers also collaborated with Oscar Hammerstein II to create "Oklahoma!" (1943), the Pulitzer Prize winning "South Pacific" (1949), "The King and I" (1951), and "The Sound of Music" (1959). Meredith Willson wrote "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" (1960), "Here's Love" (1963), and "The Music Man" (1957). Frank Loesser created "Guys and Dolls" (1950), "The Most Happy Fella" (1956), and "How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" (1962), which won a Pulitzer Prize.
