1996 LEGENDS OF HOLLYWWOD JAMES DEAN #3082 Pane of 20 x 32 cents US Postage Stamps

1996 LEGENDS OF HOLLYWWOD JAMES DEAN #3082 Pane of 20 x 32 cents US Postage Stamps - In 1996 the USPS issued this 32 cent stamp in honor of James Dean. Famous for his intense, brooding portrayals of rebellious young men, James Dean became a symbol for a generation of restless youths defying social conformity. Despite a film career that encompassed only three feature roles, he remains an idol today as much for his rebellious character as for his acting ability. Born in 1931, James Byron Dean was raised in Fairmont, Indiana. He went on to study acting at the University of California and at Actors Studio in New York City before beginning a professional stage career. Although his portrayal of the blackmailing Arab in the Broadway play "The Immoralist" showed promise, his first major break came in 1954, when he signed with Warner Bros. to play Cal Trask in Elia Kazan's "East of Eden.' But it was his sensitive interpretation of the brooding Jim Stark in "Rebel Without a Cause" that established him as the personification of youthful frustration and forever cemented his image in American culture. On September 30, 1955, Dean died in a car accident shortly before the completion of his last film, "Giant," which opened in New York the following year. ( East of Eden, Rebel Without a Cause, The Immoralist, Legends of Hollywood )
